As a result of this, and a more advanced support of HTML 4, CSS, DOM, and ECMAScript by Internet Explorer starting with version 4, the more up-to-date Internet Explorer 5.0 became the market leader. But there were significant delays to the release of Netscape's next major version and Communicator therefore aged badly over the many years it was still used. Netscape Communicator 5.0 was announced (codenamed "Gromit"). On January 22, 1998, Netscape Communications Corporation announced that all future versions of their software would be free of charge and developed by an Open Source Community ( Mozilla). Standalone versions for other operating systems such as Unix/Linux were maintained up to version 4.8. A standalone version of Netscape Navigator was still available, but this was discontinued after version 4.08 for Windows. Only one month later, Netscape Communications Corporation was bought by AOL. This new version featured various functionality improvements, especially in the Mail/News component, but did not update the browser core (which, in its functionality, was basically identical with version 4.08). In October 1998 version 4.5 of Netscape Communicator was released. The Communicator suite was made up of Netscape Navigator, Netscape Mail and Newsgroups, Netscape Address Book and Netscape Composer (an HTML editor, which later became Mozilla Composer and eventually was split off into a completely separate product, Nvu). The new suite was successful, despite increasing competition from Internet Explorer 4.0 and problems with the outdated browser core. This new version, more or less based on Netscape Navigator 3 Code, updated and added new features (such as support of certain CSS1 elements, minimal dynamic font support and the proprietary object element). released the final version of Netscape Communicator in June 1997. Īfter releasing five preview releases from 1996 to 1997, Netscape Corp. Netscape 4 addressed the problem of Netscape Navigator being used as both the name of the suite and the browser contained within it by renaming the suite to Netscape Communicator. Netscape Communicator (versions 4.5–4.8) Netscape Navigator 3 was the undisputed web browser giant in its time with over 90% share, but it was later eroded by the free Internet Explorer included with Windows 95. Netscape 3.0 introduced many new features such as new plug-ins, background colors for tables, the archive attribute, and the applet element. ![]() Version 3.0 was also available in a "Gold" version which featured a WYSIWYG HTML editor (later added to Netscape Communicator as a standard feature), and was sold as retail software for profit. Version 3.0 of Netscape was the first to face any serious competition in the form of Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0, but Netscape held off Microsoft's challenge and remained the number one browser for the time. Around the same time, AOL started bundling their software with Microsoft's Internet Explorer. During this period, both the browser and the suite were known as Netscape Navigator. ![]() Version 2.0 added a full mail reader called Netscape Mail, thus transforming Netscape from a mere web browser to an Internet suite. Netscape's feature-count and market share continued to grow rapidly after version 1.0 was released. The browser was the most advanced available and was an instant success, becoming market leader while still in beta. The company's name also changed from Mosaic Communications Corporation to Netscape Communications Corporation. The first version of the browser was released in 1994, known as Mosaic and then Mosaic Netscape until a legal challenge from the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (makers of NCSA Mosaic, which many of Netscape's founders had spent time developing) which led to the name change to Netscape Navigator. Netscape Navigator was the name of Netscape's web browser from versions 1.0 through 4.8. ![]() ![]() ![]() And it's actually relatively simple to use once you get the hang of the directions. The Ridgid may be more expensive than liquid or gel cleaners, but it can be used time and again. It's a much safer alternative than a regular drain snake, too - these tools can cause damage to the porcelain, especially if you're not experienced in using one. Having trouble eradicating a clogged toilet with a good old-fashioned plunger? A toilet auger may well succeed where a plunger didn’t. Even self-reported sensitive users say there aren't any bothersome fumes to contend with when using Liquid-Plumr. ![]() Like Drano, this product is unscented and mild. For badly clogged drains, you can leave Liquid-Plumr in the drain overnight to work, then flush thoroughly with hot water in the morning. Per instructions, wait for all the water to drain out of the sink or tub (or bail it out if it won't flow), then pour the bottle of Liquid-Plumr - yes, you need to use the whole bottle - slowly down the drain. "This one is an oxidizing cleaner, so it's very tough on organic matter like hair and food, but less so on grease," says Rachel Rothman, chief technologist of the Good Housekeeping Institute. Just consider the application before using this product to clear up any old drain issue. According to the manufacturer, it is septic-safe, and based on our experience with other Liquid-Plumr products, we have no reason to think otherwise. Liquid-Plumr's thick gel was specifically designed to power through hair clogs that slow down sink, tub and shower drains. Any lingering smell of the unscented product can be easily mitigated by turning on a bathroom fan. Users also like that this drain cleaner doesn't have an exceptionally caustic fragrance. In the case of a persistent clog, you might have to apply the solution a second time, but at less than $10 a bottle, it's still a great value. For minor clogs and slow-flowing drains, the gel works in 15 to 30 minutes. Simply pour the formula down a backed-up sink or drain. It's relatively quick to work, too - and doesn't require much manual labor on your part. "It's a caustic cleaner, meaning it contains bleach and other corrosive ingredients that are especially tough on grease and soap scum," says Dan DiClerico, director of the GH Institute's Home Improvement Lab. In our tests, we've been consistently impressed by the clearing power of this gel formulation, which is safe for all plumbing and septic systems. ![]() The storied product turns 100 years old this year, so our experts certainly know it well. Drano is the Q-tip of drain cleaners - the brand you probably think of first for tackling clogs. ![]() ![]() Switching them up regularly makes it easy to adjust to the seasons, or simply freshen up the look of the room you likely spend the most waking time in.
